He made 212 in the first innings of the match.[[41]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-44>)[[42]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-45>) Sharma was named as vice-captain of India's Test team during the [tour of Australia in 2020](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in Australia in 2020–21"), replacing [Cheteshwar Pujara](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Cheteshwar Pujara").[[43]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-46>)[[44]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-47>)[[45]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-48>) He had a successful [home series against England in 2021](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "English cricket team in India in 2020–21"). Instrumental in his team's comeback after a defeat in the first Test at Chennai, he scored a century, one that _[The Guardian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "The Guardian")_ termed "deserves to be considered one of the greatest this century."[[46]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-ENG2021-49>) He put on 167 runs with [Ajinkya Rahane](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Ajinkya Rahane") for the fourth wicket while making 161 runs in an innings that included 18 [fours](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Four \(cricket\)") and two [sixes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Six \(cricket\)").[[47]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-50>) India went on to win the Test by 317 runs.[[48]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-51>) He top-scored for his side in both innings of the low-scoring third Test in [Ahmedabad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Narendra Modi Stadium") with scores of 66 and 25 contributing to his team's win.[[49]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-52>) Sharma finished the series aggregating 345 runs, the most for India, at an average of 58.[[46]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-ENG2021-49>) He went on to score his first overseas Test century on 4 September 2021 with an innings of 127 against England at [The Oval](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "The Oval"), also reaching the milestone of 3,000 runs in Test cricket.[[50]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-53>) Later, he was appointed as the captain of India's Test team in February 2022, succeeding [Virat Kohli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Virat Kohli"), ahead of a two-match series against [Sri Lanka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sri Lanka national cricket team").[[51]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-54>) [Sunil Gavaskar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sunil Gavaskar") praised his leadership and [Chetan Sharma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Chetan Sharma"), India's chairman of selectors, said: "We will groom future captains under him".[[52]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-55>) He had a poor run of form with the bat in the 2024–25 season. His captaincy also came under criticism following [the 0–3 home series defeat to New Zealand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "New Zealand cricket team in India in 2024–25"), India's first Test series loss at home in 12 years,[[53]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-56>) and [the 1–3 away loss to Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in Australia in 2024–25") that followed. In his eight final Tests, he managed to score just one half-century and averaged 10.93. On 7 May 2025, ahead of [India's England tour](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in England in 2025"), he announced his retirement from Test cricket. He finished his Test career having played 61 Tests and making 4,301 runs at 40.57. India reached the semi-final stage where they were defeated by [Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Australia national cricket team"). Sharma scored 330 runs in the tournament with one century, a score of 137 in the quarter-final against [Bangladesh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Bangladesh national cricket team").[[57]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-60>) On 15 April 2019, Sharma was appointed vice-captain of [India's squad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2019 Cricket World Cup squads") for the [2019 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2019 Cricket World Cup") in England.[[58]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-61>) In the opening match against [South Africa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "South Africa national cricket team"), he scored 122, including his 12,000th run in international cricket.[[59]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-62>)[[60]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-63>) He followed it up with centuries against Pakistan, England and Bangladesh. In the match against Sri Lanka, hitting yet another century, he became the first batsman to score five centuries in a single World Cup tournament,[[61]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-64>) and equalled Tendulkar's record for the most centuries (6) in all World Cup matches.[[62]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-65>) Sharma totalled 648 runs in the tournament to finish as the leading run-scorer and win the ICC's [Golden Bat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Cricket World Cup awards") award, the third Indian player to do so.[[63]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-66>) On 8 October 2023, during the ICC Cricket World Cup, Sharma was entrusted with the captaincy responsibilities for the Indian team in a match against Australia. This significant moment marked the first time he captained the Indian side in the [Cricket World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Cricket World Cup"). What set this particular event apart was that at that time, he had become the oldest player to lead the Indian team in the tournament,[[64]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-67>) showcasing his maturity and experience as a cricketer. On 11 October 2023, during a match against [Afghanistan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Afghanistan national cricket team") in the [Cricket World Cup 2023](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2023 Cricket World Cup"), Sharma achieved a milestone by surpassing the [Sachin Tendulkar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sachin Tendulkar")'s record for the most centuries in World Cup history. With a display of batting prowess, Sharma notched his seventh century, breaking the record in this World Cup encounter.[[65]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-68>) ### Other one-day international matches Sharma made his full international debut in a one-day match against [Ireland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Ireland cricket team") in Belfast on 23 June 2007. This was part of the [2007 Future Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2007 Future Cup") competition which also involved [South Africa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "South Africa national cricket team"). He was number seven in the batting order but did not bat as India won the game by 9 wickets.[[66]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-69>) He scored his maiden ODI half-century (52) against Pakistan at Jaipur on 18 November 2007 and was selected for the Indian squad going to the [2007–08 Commonwealth Bank Series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2007–08 Commonwealth Bank Series") in Australia.[[67]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-70>)[[68]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-71>) In that series, he scored 235 runs at an average of 33.57 with 2 fifties, including 66 in the first final at Sydney when he partnered [Sachin Tendulkar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sachin Tendulkar") for most of India's successful run chase.[[69]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-72>)[[70]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-73>) After that, however, his ODI performances suffered a downturn and he lost his middle-order position to [Suresh Raina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Suresh Raina"). Later, [Virat Kohli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Virat Kohli") took his position as the reserve batsman. In December 2009, following his triple century in the Ranji Trophy, he was recalled to the ODI team for the tri-nations tournament in Bangladesh as Tendulkar opted to rest in the series.[[71]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-74>) He scored his maiden ODI century (114) against [Zimbabwe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Zimbabwe national cricket team") on 28 May 2010 and followed it up with another century in the next match of the tri-series against [Sri Lanka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sri Lanka national cricket team") on 30 May 2010 by scoring 101 not out.[[72]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-75>)[[73]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-76>) He had a run of poor form in South Africa just before the [2011 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2011 Cricket World Cup") and as a consequence he was left out of India's squad for the tournament.[[74]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-77>) Sharma was recalled to the limited-overs squad for the [tour of the West Indies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in the West Indies in 2011") in June and July 2011.[[75]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-78>) In the first match at [Queen's Park Oval](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Queen's Park Oval"), he scored 68 (not out) from 75 balls with three fours and a six. In the third match at the [Sir Vivian Richards Stadium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sir Vivian Richards Stadium") in Antigua, he scored a match-winning 86 off 91 balls after India had been reduced to 92 for 6.[[76]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-79>) He had a disastrous loss of form in 2012 and scored only 168 runs in the whole calendar year at the very low average of 12.92 with just a single half-century. Even so, his captain [Mahendra Singh Dhoni](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Mahendra Singh Dhoni") showed faith in him, and his career was revived in 2013. Dhoni decided to move him up the batting order to open the innings with [Shikhar Dhawan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Shikhar Dhawan") in the [2013 ICC Champions Trophy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2013 ICC Champions Trophy"). The pairing was a success and India won the competition, defeating hosts [England](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "England cricket team") in the final.[_[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Wikipedia:Citation needed")_] His good form continued and, [later in the year against Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Australian cricket team in India in 2013–14"), he scored 141 (not out) in Jaipur. He followed that with 209 off 158 balls in Bangalore and established a then-world record for the most sixes (16) in a one-day international innings (since beaten by [Eoin Morgan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Eoin Morgan") of England with 17).[[77]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-80>) On 13 November 2014, playing against Sri Lanka at [Eden Gardens](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Eden Gardens") in Kolkata, Sharma broke the world record for the highest score in a one-day international innings with 264 from 173 deliveries.[[78]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-81>)[[79]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-82>) In December 2017, India's captain Virat Kohli was rested for the [series against Sri Lanka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sri Lankan cricket team in India in 2017–18"), in preparation for [India's tour to South Africa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in South Africa in 2017–18"), which began in the first week of January 2018. In his place, Sharma was appointed team captain and India under his leadership won the series 2–1, their eighth consecutive series win since [defeating Zimbabwe in June 2016](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in Zimbabwe in 2016").[[80]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-83>)[[81]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-84>) Sharma also hit his third ODI double-century in this series, scoring 208 (not out) to extend his record of most ODI double-centuries by a player.[[82]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-85>) In September 2018, in the absence of many top players including regular captain [Virat Kohli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Virat Kohli"), Sharma led India to win the [2018 Asia Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2018 Asia Cup"), where they defeated [Bangladesh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Bangladesh") in the final.[[83]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-:0-86>) On 12 January 2019, in the opening match against Australia at the [Sydney Cricket Ground](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sydney Cricket Ground"), Sharma scored 133 but it was in vain as India lost by 34 runs. It was his 22nd century in one-day internationals.[[84]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-87>) At Delhi on 13 March 2019, in the fifth and final match of a home series against Australia, Sharma scored 56 including his 8,000th run in one-day internationals. It was his 200th innings.[[85]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-88>) In 2019, he scored the most runs in ODIs by any batsman, with 1,490 runs in the calendar year, including 7 centuries.[[86]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-89>) In November 2020, Sharma was nominated for the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Decade award.[[87]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-auto1-90>)[[88]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-auto-91>) In July 2022, Sharma became the first Indian captain to lead their team to both T20I and ODI series wins in England. With that, he became the second Indian cricketer to have scored centuries in all three formats of international cricket.[[93]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-96>) In December 2017, in a series against Sri Lanka, Sharma scored the joint-fastest T20I century, in 35 balls, ending with 118 from 43 deliveries, equaling the record of [David Miller](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "David Miller \(South African cricketer\)"). This was also his second century in Twenty20 internationals.[[94]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-97>) On 8 July 2018, during a [series in England](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian cricket team in England in 2018"), Sharma became the second Indian batsman, after Virat Kohli, to score 2,000 runs in a Twenty20 international career.[[95]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-98>) He was the fifth batsman worldwide to achieve the feat; the others besides Kohli were [Brendon McCullum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Brendon McCullum"), [Martin Guptill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Martin Guptill") and [Shoaib Malik](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Shoaib Malik").[[96]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-99>) He also scored his third T20I century during this series, equaling the then-record for most T20I centuries, held by [Colin Munro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Colin Munro").[[97]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-100>) In March 2018, he led Team India to win the [Nidahas Trophy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Nidahas Trophy") under his captaincy.[[83]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-:0-86>) In November 2018, in a [series against West Indies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "West Indian cricket team in India in 2018–19"), he scored his fourth T20I century, creating a new record for the most centuries by a player in T20I cricket.[[98]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-101>) In November 2019, in the opening match of the series [against Bangladesh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Bangladeshi cricket team in India in 2019–20"), Sharma became the [most-capped cricketer for India in T20Is](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "List of Twenty20 International records"), playing in his 99th match.[[99]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-102>) In the next match of the series, he became the first male cricketer for India [to play in 100 T20Is](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "List of Twenty20 International records").[[100]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-103>) In November 2020, Sharma was nominated for the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Decade award.[[87]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-auto1-90>)[[88]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-auto-91>) In July 2022, Sharma became the first captain in T20I history to lead their team to 14 consecutive victories.[[89]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-:1-92>) With his participation in the [2022 T20 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup") in Australia, Sharma became the only Indian cricketer to have played in every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2007.[[101]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-104>) On 27 October 2022, Sharma broke the record for most sixes by an Indian batsman in T20 World Cups, previously held by [Yuvraj Singh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Yuvraj Singh"), hitting his 34th six against [Netherlands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Netherlands national cricket team") at [Sydney Cricket Ground](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sydney Cricket Ground").[[102]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-105>)[[103]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-106>) In May 2024, he was named as a captain in India's squad for the [2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup") tournament.[[104]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-107>) In June 2024, during a match against Ireland, he achieved the milestone of hitting 600 sixes in international cricket across all formats.[[105]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-108>) On 29 June 2024, Sharma led India to win the 2024 T20 World Cup after defeating South Africa in the final.[[106]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-NYT-Rohit-24-109>) In the post-match press conference after the T20 World Cup victory, Sharma declared his retirement from T20Is, while confirming that he would continue to represent India in ODIs and Test match formats.[[5]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-NDTV-Rohit-30Jun24-5>) ## Franchise career Rohit Sharma joined the [Indian Premier League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Indian Premier League") (IPL) in 2008 when he was signed by the [Deccan Chargers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Deccan Chargers") franchise, based in [Hyderabad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Hyderabad"), for the sum of US$750,000 a year.[[107]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-110>) In 2009, he won the IPL for the first time as the vice-captain of the team. In his column for _[The Times of India](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "The Times of India")_ in November 2018, Gavaskar said:[[123]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-126>) > The standout performer in both the limited overs series and the T20 series has been Rohit Sharma. Like Virender Sehwag before him, he is unstoppable once he gets going and like Viru he has an appetite for big hundreds. When Viru used to get out looking to hit another delivery out of the park, there used to be consternation around the ground, just like it is when Rohit gets out to a seemingly casual shot. If Rohit can turn his white ball exploits into red ball cricket, he will be the most destructive batsman in the world after Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag. While Sharma is not a regular bowler, he can bowl right-arm [off spin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Off spin").[[12]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-CI34102-15>) He usually fields in the [slips](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Slip \(cricket\)") and has said this is a part of his game which he works very hard on for improvement.[[124]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-127>) ## When supporting the cause Sharma said, "Sterilisation is important because I feel that if we can stop (the homeless-animal crisis), there will be control of population among the street dogs".[[148]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-151>) In September 2015, along with Hollywood actors [Matt LeBlanc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Matt LeBlanc") and [Salma Hayek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Salma Hayek"), Sharma joined an anti-poaching campaign in Kenya to save the wild animals of Africa including the last surviving [northern white rhinoceros](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Northern white rhinoceros"). When joining the campaign Sharma said, "I have been a member of PETA and when I was informed about the cause, I thought it is my duty to join the anti-poaching drive. That's what got me to Nairobi. I was fascinated to have a look at [Sudan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Sudan \(rhinoceros\)") (the last northern white rhino) and the sniffer dogs who catch hold of the poachers".[[149]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-152>) In November 2017, Sharma in a video on social media said that he had agreed with an online store to merchandise mobile phone covers and other items that would use his name and ODI jersey no. 45. Sharma also told his Twitter followers: "All proceeds from your purchases would go to an animal charity of my choice".[[150]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-153>) In 2018 on "World Rhino Day", Sharma was announced as the [WWF-India](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "WWF-India") Rhino Ambassador. Ravi Singh, the CEO and Secretary General of WWF-India, said "We welcome Rohit into the WWF family". After taking a pledge for the cause of rhino conservation, Sharma said, "My love for rhinos sparked when I first heard about Sudan, the last male northern white African rhino who died this year thus leading to the inevitable extinction of the entire species and that broke my heart. As the world and I mourned for my fallen friend Sudan, I researched the best way for me to help prevent something like this happening and the best way I know how is to create awareness. After getting in touch with WWF I learnt that 82% of the world's rhinos reside in India and I am honoured to be WWF-India's rhino ambassador to spread awareness and do my bit to contribute to the protection and survival of the rhino and help make this world a better place for them."[[151]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-154>) ## References 1. **[^](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_ref-7> "Jump up")** 624 as on 11 December 2024.[[6]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_note-6>) He also has highest sixes in the T20I format (205). 2. **[^](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_ref-10> "Jump up")** 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final, 2023 ICC ODI Cricket World Cup final,2024 ICC T20 World Cup final and 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final 3. **[^](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_ref-12> "Jump up")** The other player is [Shakib Al Hasan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ "Shakib Al Hasan") of Bangladesh. 1. **[^](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<#cite_ref-1> "Jump up")** ["Rohit Sharma Reveals Origins Of His Nickname 'The Hitman'"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/). 19 May 2020.
